Kaman to Exhibit at Propulsion Instrumentation Working Group 2018 Conference

KD-5400 Digital Differential System, differential measurement system, and extreme environment sensors and systems to be displayed at table 13.

Middletown, CT – The Measuring Division of Kaman Precision Products, Inc., the world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance position measurement systems, announces that it will display a range of products suitable for use in testing and evaluating turbine engines at the Propulsion Instrumentation Working Group (PIWG) 2018 Conference, to be held October 29-November 1, 2018 in Jupiter, Florida. Kaman experts will be on hand at table 13 to discuss its KD-5400 Digital Differential System, KD-5100 differential measurement system, and Extreme Environment high-precision displacement sensors and systems. Typical applications include condition based monitoring, tip clearance, extreme high temperature pressure speed monitoring and on-board sensors.

The KD-5400 is designed to provide a digital interface for high speed eddy current measurement systems, with resolution in the micro-inch range, at bandwidths as high as 60 kilohertz (kHz). It is ideal for use in applications for fast steering mirrors, magnetic bearing active control, shaft vibration, image stabilization, and adaptive optics. Using a standard 9D connector for reading data, power, and control signals, the system operates from a single power supply with a voltage range of 8-28 volts. Kaman’s custom sensors, signal processing, analog to digital converter, and custom calibration system are used to deliver each high precision KD-5400 Digital Differential System.

Also to be displayed is the KD-5100 differential measurement system, which provides resolution to a nanometer of positional change. With its proven stable design, extremely small size, and low power consumption, the KD-5100 is ideal for night vision systems, precision telescope positioning, fast steering mirrors (FSM) for space-based and airborne applications, and image stabilization systems. Kaman engineers work closely with customers to understand their specific application and optimize the KD-5100 to meet custom requirements. With a small package size, the KD-5100 is a good choice for applications where space is a limiting factor. Manufactured to MIL-H-38534, the KD-5100 features rugged construction, with a mean time between failures of better than 238,000 hours in a space flight environment and 55,000 hours in a tactical environment.

With their proven design and rugged all-welded and hermetic construction, Kaman’s extreme environment sensors and systems are ideal for rocket and turbine engine validation testing, providing high accuracy, high reliability, and structural integrity. Extreme Environment sensors and systems work in operating temperatures ranging from -320°F to +1000°F (+1200°F short term). The displacement systems withstand pressures up to 5000 pound-force per square inch (psi), while their dual-coil sensor design effectively minimizes temperature effects. All of Kaman’s high temperature transducers are made with hermetically sealed, all laser-welded Inconel housings and use and Inconel-jacketed, mineral-insulated cable. The sensors are unaffected by environmental contaminants and can withstand corrosive gas or liquid environments.

In addition to the company’s presence at the table, Kaman engineering expert Pat Collins will discuss Turbomachinery Dynamics and the use of eddy-current sensors to measure both turbine tip clearance and speed (RPM). The presentation will be held on November 1st, 2018, at 11:30 AM EST.
